Hi, I'm Marrit Jagers op Akkerhuis, owner of STUDIO JOA, a one-person studio in the Netherlands, making everything by hand.

I started ceramics as a child, taking lessons at a small art school in Wageningen. It became my way out of things I struggled with at school. I had no idea then that it would ever become my life.
In the last 15 years, after finishing art school in Groningen, I designed for other brands, as a graphic designer and design director, always drawn to simplicity, to balance, to detail. But after years of working for others, in their style and on their timeline, I wanted to work from my own voice and pace more and more.
That's why I started STUDIO JOA, a place where I can do what I love and share my love for design and craft with the world.
Three years ago, I moved from Amsterdam to Noordwijk with my family. And I got to fulfil my dream of having a home studio. A place where I can work alongside our busy family life, with two small kids. Since January 2026, my home studio has been up and running, and I've never felt more at home in my work.
I make my work in small batches, often using recycled clay, fired with solar energy, with the intention of creating objects that last a lifetime.

Every object develops through research, sketching, sampling and experimentation.
Classic wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques form the foundation, complemented by new techniques and ideas.
Documenting the work is part of the process. Through photography and film, I capture the material, form and atmosphere of each piece.
